About Peter Jeffery... The Christian Herald...Distributing God's Truth for His Glory! |
Peter Jeffery was born in 1937 and became a Christian in 1955 at the age of 17. He spent a day with a group of Christians and in the morning stated to his future wife, Lorna, "I will never become a Christian". By that afternoon, Peter was a new creation. Peter married Lorna at age 21 and they had their first child at age 23. Nine days later the baby died of Spina bifida. Though Peter had been preaching since he was 18, this incident was used by God to call Peter into His service. Peter was ordained to the ministry in 1963 at age 25 and served as the Minister at the Ebenezer Congregational Church in Cwmbran, Wales. In 1972 he accepted a call to the Rugby Evangelical Free Church where he ministered until 1986. In 1986 Peter went to the Bethlehem Evangelical Church. There he ministered faithfully until 1994. In 1994 Peter started an itinerant preaching ministry which lasted for one year but was slowed down by heart trouble. His itinerant ministry allowed him to preach at churches and conferences in Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Spain, and the U.S.A. Peter's preaching over the years has been a testimony that anointed expository preaching is not a thing of the past. Heavily influenced by Charles Spurgeon and Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, there is the same seriousness about the need of proclaiming the truths of the Bible.
Starting in 1985 Peter had his first heart attack followed by a quadruple bypass operation in 1992. In 1995, he was forced to retire from full time work after a second heart attack. Peter's poor health has resulted in an end to his itinerant ministry, but he still continues to preach locally most Sundays when his health allows, and has used his time to continue writing books. He is the author of almost 40. Some books have been translated into Welsh, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, Portuguese, German, Chinese, Arabic and Rumanian. Some of his books include: All Things New, Firm Foundations, The Christian Handbook, I will Never Become a Christian, and Which Way to God (a 30 page full colour evangelistic booklet).
Peter's burden over the course of his ministry has been to see the Lord graciously visit His people again with revival. It was to this aim that he preached and continues to preach. He has been a true Gospel preacher over the years and believes strongly in the need for a return to preaching expository gospel messages. Peter's advice to young preachers is to "Let the scripture speak for itself. Exposit the text. Preach the text. Let the word of God speak." In addition to this, he has always had a burden for the new believer and many of his books have been aimed at this much forgotten group of Christians. Peter exhorts young believers are to take their faith seriously. See the leaflet "Gospel Preaching."
